How Often Should You Train?
Are you ready to start training Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu (BJJ) at the BJJ Lab in Zürich or are you already training? If you’re buzzing with excitement, that’s awesome! But you might be asking yourself: How often should you train BJJ?
Starting something new can be a thrill, and BJJ is no exception. It’s a sport that challenges your mind, body, and spirit in the best ways possible. But like any good thing, there’s a sweet spot for how much you should dive in, especially at the beginning.
The Beginner’s Path: 2-3 Times a Week
If you’re just starting in our basic course, aim to train about 2-3 times a week. Why? Because your body and mind need time to adjust to the new movements and challenges of BJJ. It’s a bit like learning to dance; you wouldn’t try to master an entire dance in one day, right? Give yourself at least one rest day between sessions. This rest is your friend – it helps your body adapt and recover, making you stronger and more prepared for the next class.
Building Your Foundation: 3-4 Times a Week
Once you’ve got the hang of the basics and your body feels more comfortable, you can consider upping your training to 3-4 times a week. This frequency is great for really getting into the BJJ fundamentals. Training this much helps you make solid progress and truly start to feel the flow of the sport. Remember, training less than 2-3 times can make progressing tougher, so finding that sweet training rhythm is key.
For the Love of the Sport: Training (Almost) Every Day
Now, if you find yourself completely in love with BJJ – thinking about it all day, dreaming about new techniques at night – you might be tempted to train every single day. And you can, with a bit of caution. It’s crucial to slowly increase how much you train. Don’t leap from training a couple of times a week to hitting the mats every day. Your body needs time to adjust to the increased demand.
As you get better, training daily becomes easier. Why? Because you learn to manage the intensity of each session. On some days, you might focus on technique and flow rather than going all out. Remember, even if you’re training every day, it’s wise to take at least one rest day a week. This gives your body a chance to recover and keeps you from burning out.
Finding Your Rhythm
No matter how often you decide to train, the key is to find a regular routine that meshes well with your schedule. A routine helps you balance training with the rest of your life, making sure you have time for work, friends, family, and rest.
In BJJ, like in life, it’s all about finding balance. Start with a pace that feels right, listen to your body, and adjust as you grow. Whether you’re on the mats two times a week or every day, what truly matters is that you’re there, learning, growing, and enjoying the journey. So, are you ready to find your training sweet spot? Let’s get started!
